Obstacles act as hazards that can disrupt and damage ships. When a ship executes a maneuver, if its base or maneuver template overlaps an obstacle token, it executes its maneuver as normal but suffers an effect based on the type of obstacle. The two types of obstacles are asteroids and debris clouds. The Huge Ships rulebook also adds the option of using huge ships as obstacles in standard play.

Obstacle Setup[]

Standard Game[]

Starting with the player with initiative, each player chooses one obstacle token from the obstacles available and places it in the play area. The players place a total of six obstacle tokens. Obstacles cannot be placed at Range 1 of each other, or at Range 1-2 of an edge of the play area. After the sixth obstacle is placed, the player who does not have initiative chooses an edge of the play area to be his own; his opponent's edge is on the opposite side of the play area.

Tournament Game[]

Each player must include exactly three unique obstacle tokens of their choice in their squad. Players must select these obstacles from the twelve asteroids included in the two core sets (X-Wing Core Set and X-Wing The Force Awakens Core Set) and the six debris clouds included in the YT- 2400 and VT-49 Decimator expansion packs. A player may not select two of the same asteroid or debris cloud.

Each player places their three unique asteroids and/or debris cloud tokens next to the play area to form a pool of six obstacles. The player with initiative chooses one of these tokens and places it into the play area. Then, the other player chooses one of the remaining tokens and places it into the play area. The players continue to alternate until all six tokens have been placed. An obstacle token cannot be placed at Range 1–2 of any edge of the play area or at Range 1 of another obstacle token.

Moving Through and Overlapping[]

Huge Ship Rules[]

When a huge ship executes a maneuver and the final position of one of its sections overlaps one or more obstacle tokens, the huge ship is dealt one faceup Damage card. Draw this Damage card from the Damage deck that corresponds to the affected section. If both sections overlap, the opposing player chooses which section suffers the damage.

Obstacles do not cause a huge ship to skip its “Perform Action” step. All obstacle tokens that are overlapped by a huge ship are immediately removed from the play area.

The huge ship suffers these effects when one of its sections overlaps an obstacle, not when its maneuver template overlaps an obstacle.

Attacking Through Obstacles[]

Obstacles represent space features that are difficult to fire through.

When measuring range for an attack, if the edge of the range ruler overlaps an obstacle token, the attack is obstructed. For an obstructed attack, the defender rolls one additional defense die.

Destroying Obstacles[]

Some cards, such as Seismic Torpedo, allow a player to remove an obstacle from the play area during the game.

To do so, the player selects the obstacle which they wish to destroy, and then remove it from the play area (suffering all the conditional effects of doing so). The obstacle is then placed to one side of the play area, where it no longer affects the course of the game.

Effect on Maneuvers[]

  • If a ship moves through or overlaps an obstacle while executing a Koiogran Turn, Left Segnor's Loop, or Right Segnor's Loop maneuver, it still rotates 180° when placed.
  • If a ship moves through or overlaps an obstacle while executing a Left Tallon Roll or Right Tallon Roll, it still rotates 90° when placed.
  • If a ship overlaps another ship, only the portion of the maneuver template that is between the starting and final positions of the ship is counted for the purpose of overlapping obstacles. Ignore the portion of the maneuver template that the ship moved backward along to resolve the overlap.
  • If a ship moves through or overlaps more than one obstacle, it suffers the effects of each obstacle, starting with the obstacle that was closest to the ship in its starting position and proceeding outward.
  • If a ship is overlapping an obstacle at the start of its maneuver, it ignores that obstacle unless its maneuver template or final position overlaps that obstacle again.

Using Huge Ships as Obstacles[]

Players may use huge ships as obstacles instead of as a ship in standard play. To do so, flip the huge ship token to the starfield side and follow the rules for adding obstacles described on page 20 of the core set rulebook, with the following change: one player places the huge ship obstacle first instead of his three asteroid tokens. Huge ships may not be used as obstacles during tournament play, except in casual events in which the Tournament Organizer has announced prior to the event that they will allow huge ships to be used as obstacles.

The huge ship obstacle is not controlled by any player. It does not move, and it cannot be attacked, damaged, or destroyed.

When a small or large ship executes a maneuver and the final position of its base overlaps a huge ship, the overlapping ship must follow the rules under “Plastic Bases Overlapping” described on page 17 of the core set rulebook. Additionally, the player controlling the overlapping ship rolls one attack die and suffers any damage and critical damage rolled.

Huge ships obstruct attacks (even ones which aren't obstacles) but overlapping one does not impede a ship from attacking.
