Template Explanation

The way the chart above gets inserted is by writing the following code in source mode:

The magic of this line is that I've created a page called Template:Maneuver X-Wing (click edit to view how a template looks, but be careful about saving). The curly braces invoke a template, perform any needed work on it (e.g. params and additional template inserts, which will matter below), and insert its results into the page. You can learn more on Help:Template.

The x-wing's maneuver template itself has lines like this, which are calling out to other templates:

Notice the comments between lines, encompassing newlines. I use the comments to format the code in the actual template with newlines and spaces for clarity, without actually inserting spaces into the final result.

Each of these lines is calling out to another template, which I've set up to insert an image based on the parameters passed. ManeuverSpeed takes only one parameter, and produces the number image for the left side for indicating maneuver speed. ManeuverCell is more complex; it takes several parameters that allow one template to produce one of many possible images, ranging from a blank slot, blank with border, right green turn, etc. As long as images are named correctly, they'll work perfectly for the template.

Parameters:

1. faction: rebel (r), empire (e), or scum (s). We could add other factions (or even freeform factions) if needed.
2. maneuver type: turn (t), bank (b), straight (s), kturn (kt), segnor's loop (sl), tallon roll (tr), reverse bank (revb), reverse straight (revs), blank space ()
3. maneuver side [or border side of blank]: left (l), right (r), straight or n/a () (meaning leave blank)
4. color: red (r), white (w), green (g)
5. size: small (s) or normal (n) (not yet implemented, but will just scale to half size for small)

Each wiki template we want to create for a ship's maneuver card will basically look like Template:Maneuver X-Wing with small adjustments to the vars passed into each line.

At this time I don't know a good way of setting the background instead of building the image cell by cell. Perhaps we could put it all inside a box or table cell with a background image, and make the blank space images literally blank. Or not worry about it, and have the blank space images be some tile-able image that's reasonably close to the normal look of FFG's maneuver cards but not exact.
