If you're still deciding on your next purchase, it might not hurt to wait another month or two to see if the new FAQ drops by then. As you mentioned, there have been a lot of hints that it will drastically affect the meta, and it could do a lot to inform your purchase. But we don't know when it will land... FFG is notoriously mum about its schedule.
As for ghost & u-wing:
At this time, the Ghost (VCX-100) is a great ship. It's got a lot of neat things it can do, and comes with multiple good cards. It's often an expensive ship and you build your fleet around it (though not always -- the cheapest pilot is 35 points), but it pays off nicely.
Sadly the U-Wing isn't great in the meta at this time. It comes with excellent upgrade cards (e.g. Expertise and Inspiring Recruit just to name a couple), but the ship itself is hard to use effectively. It wants to be a crew transport and support ship, but Rebels lack the sorts of crew that would make it shine in that role (Empire have crew like Systems Officer and Fleet Officer, Scum have stuff like K4 Security Droid on a Jumpmaster). Kanan Jarrus (Crew) and Jan Ors (Crew) are pretty good, but they haven't translated to the U-Wing having a clear role. And rebels have various multi-crew ships already, like the YT-1300 and Ghost (though they're expensive in points for a pure support role, they cross into other roles and do fine). And finally, the two-crew-slot Auzituck came out and muscled the U-Wing out of that role anyway, arguably doing it a lot better.
If you play casually then the U-Wing might measure up just fine. Otherwise, people mainly purchase it for its upgrades.
